Stuart Copping - teacher, writer, gamer and movie enthusiast
In 2002 I dropped out of computer graphics degree, moved to High Wycombe and started a degree in film with a creative writing option. As I progressed I found myself wanting to write more and more, harboring some small desire to write my own novel.
Fastforward to 2011 and I'm finally doing something about it. No longer working in film and tv I am a primary school teacher in Bristol and I love my job. I have also just enrolled on the Writer's Bureau's childrens writers course and am making slow but successful progress.
Now I spend my time looking after my son, jotting down ideas whenever I can and enjoying all that the Playstation 3 has to offer.
My early inspiration for writing for children came from reading Brian Jacques' Redwall
series and Colin Dann's Animal's of Farthing Wood adventures. Unfortunatley Brian died earlier this year and his words will be sorely missed. More recently I have found Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time saga and George R.R Martins' epic A Song of Ice and Fire series. You may have seen the latter on tv recently in the form of Game of Thrones. Please do yourselves a favour and go ahead and read the books, they are most excellent!
My choice of children's fiction over adult fantasy is that I'm still a kid at heart and never
intend to grow up, much like Peter Pan. I still find children's fantasy my favourite genre and with a little thanks to JK Rowling, I doubt it will be dying off any time soon. I'm not out for fame and fortune just looking to create books that I myself would enjoy now but love as a child.
